Alvy Ray Smith is best known for being the co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios as well as Altamira. Smith was born in Mineral Wells, Texas, and he has earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from New Mexico State University and while there, he created his first computer graphic. Smith then went on to earn his Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University where he became known for his dissertation on cellular automata theory. Smith then went on to be an associate professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at New York University and also taught for some time at University of California, Berkeley. Smith has worked for Xerox PARC where he worked on SuperPaint and helped created the HSV color space. While working at the New York Institute of Technology, Smith met Ed Catmull who he worked with on Pixar as well as Lucasfilm Computer Division. Apart from his work with Pixar and Lucasfilm, Smith has been a member of the board of regents of the National Library of Medicine. Through his work with Altamira, Smith co-founded the company with Eric Lyons and Nicholas Clay. Altamira was later bought out by Microsoft and after being acquired by Microsoft, Smith became the first Graphics Fellow for Microsoft.
