James Elmer Mitchell is an American psychologist who is a former member of the United States Air Force, a former CIA interrogator, and author. Mitchell joined the Air Force and went on to be stationed in Alaska where he learned how to disarm unexploded ordnance. He then went on to work in Texas as a hostage negotiator and left the Air Force to earn his degrees. Mitchell then earned his master’s in psychology from the University of Alaska before going on to earn his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of South Florida. After earning his Ph.D., Mitchell went back to work with the Air Force where he was a chief of psychology at the Fairchild Air Force Base. During this time, he worked as a supervisor for military going through Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape training. He then went on to be a psychology at the Air Force Special Operations Command before retiring from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. After 9/11, Mitchell was asked to develop an interrogation program for the CIA where he recommended a type of SERE training. During this time, Mitchell helped lead the development of their program and was a primary interrogator himself. Apart from his work with the CIA, Mitchell has also consulted with the FBI and NSA. As an author, Mitchell has authored or co-authored books which include ‘Elements of Clinical Research in Psychiatry’ and ‘Enhanced Interrogation.’.
