Engle was born in Syracuse, New York, and he earned his B.S. in physics from Williams College before going on to earn his M.S. in physics and then his Ph.D. in economics from Cornell University. After finishing his Ph.D., Engle went on to begin working as the Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then also went on to work on the faculty of the University of California, San Diego, where he worked for nearly 30 years. He has since been Professor Emeritus and Research Professor at UCSD, has been a teacher at the Stern School of Business at New York University and has been the Master of Science in Risk Management Program for Executives at New York University.
