Ryan M. Pitts is a former United States Army solider who has been the ninth living recipient of the Medal of Honor during the War in Afghanistan. Pitts was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, and when he was only in kindergarten, Pitts knew he wanted to join the army when he was old enough. After earning his high school degree, Pitts joined the United States Army and went on to train at the One Station Unit Training at Fort Sill. He then was assigned to the 319th Field Artillery Regiment before being assigned to the 503rd Infantry Regiment. During his time in the Army, Pitts was deployed to Afghanistan twice; the first time for a year, and the second time for a year and three months. Pitts earned his Medal of Honor after an Anti-Afghan Force that had over 200 members attacked the Wanat Vehicle Patrol Base. Pitts was shot and wounded but was able to gain control of the post and returned fire until help came. Apart from earning the Medal of Honor, Pitts has also earned several other awards which include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and many more.
