Dr. Alaa Murabit is a Libyan-Canadian physician, security expert, and women’s rights activist, who is the Voice of Libyan Women founder and founder of The Omnis Institute. Murabit was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and while growing up and seeing that her parents treated her differently from her brothers, she knew she wanted to become a women’s rights activist. She later moved to Libya as a teenager and studied at the College of Medicine at Al Zawiya University and she also went on to earn her Doctor of Medicine there. She has previously earned her master’s in international strategy and diplomacy from the London School of Economics where her research focused on inclusive security and securitization. Murabit began her activism work after founding the Voice of Libyan Women, where she was also previously President. The Voice of Libyan Women works to ensure women are recognized in national policies and researches women’s security. After founding VLW, Murabit did her first TED talk and then spoke at the Women in the World summit before later becoming a member of the United Nations 1325 Advisory Board. She has also been an Ashoka Fellow, an advisor to UN Women Global Civil Society Advisory Group, and founding member of the Everywoman, Everywhere initiative at Harvard University..
