Joe Mullen is an American former professional ice hockey player who played in the NHL for 16 seasons, won three Stanley Cups, and has gone on to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Mullen was born in New York City, New York, and his father worked at Madison Square Garden as an ice and maintenance staff. Mullen found himself often playing roller hockey and hung out at Madison Square Garden with his father while he would play with his brothers. Mullen didn’t learn how to skate until he was 10 years old and he eventually joined the Metropolitan Junior Hockey Association when he was a teenager. He then was offered a partial scholarship to Boston College where he played for the Eagles hockey program. He helped to lead the team to the Eastern College Athletic Conference championship and was named an all-star of the NCAA tournament. During his college career he was also named to the All-ECAC, All-New England and NCAA All-American teams and he also won the Walter Brown Award. Mullen went undrafted in the NHL Draft but was signed to the St. Louis Blues. He went on to play for two seasons with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles before going back to the St. Louis Blues. Over the course of his NHL career he also played with the Calgary Flames, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and played one season with the Boston Bruins. Mullen also played internationally with the United States in the Ice Hockey World Championships and the Canada Cup. Since retiring, Mullen has been a coach in the AHL for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins..
