Adekunle Gold is a Nigerian highlife singer-songwriter and graphic designer who rose to fame after the release of his single “Sade,” which is a highlife cover of One Direction’s hit single “Story of My Life.” Highlife is a form of music from Ghana that takes structures of Akan music but played with Western instruments. Highlife music usually uses guitars and jazzy horns and is upbeat. Gold was born in Lagos State, Nigeria, and he has earned a Higher National Diploma in Arts and Design from Lagos State Polytechnic. Gold found influence in artists such as King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey while growing up and he began his career singing in his church’s choir as a teenager before going on to begin writing songs at 15 years old.
