Deborah Archer is the Professor of Clinical Law and Co-Faculty Director of the Center on Race, Inequality and the Law at NYU School of Law. She is also the Jacob K. Javits Professor at New York University and is the President of the American Civil Liberties Union. Archer was raised in Windsor, Connecticut, to two immigrants from Jamaica. She has earned her B.A. in government from Smith College and then went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. During her time earning her Juris Doctor, Archer won the Charles G. Albom Prize. After finishing her J.D., Archer began working as a clerk for Judge Alvin Thompson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut. She then went on to be a Marvin M. Karpatkin legal fellow at the ACLU, was an assistant counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and was also an associate for the law firm Simpson Thacher and Bartlett before joining New York Law School as the first dean of diversity and inclusion and their chief diversity officer. Through her work with ACLU, Archer has been on their board, and has been on their general counsel and member of their board’s executive committee.
