Yuan Yuan Tan is a Chinese dancer who has been a principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet. Tan was born in Shanghai, China, and she began dancing after entering into the Shanghai Dance School when she was 11 years old. She went on to win several international awards while young which included a gold medal and the Nijinsky Award at the 1st Japan International Ballet and Modern Dance Competition. She also went on to earn a gold medal at the International Ballet Competition in Paris. Once Tan reached the age of 18, she went on to begin working as a solo dancer with the San Francisco Ballet. Within only two years of working with the San Francisco Ballet, Tan earned the promotion to principal dancer, which is the highest position for a ballet dancer and usually takes much longer.
