Sweet Spirit started out as a solo project for Austin, Texas-based singer Sabrina Ellis. Sabrina was, at the time, the lead singer of the band Bobby Jealousy which was unfortunately coming to an end. Feeling this cascade, she harnessed that energy to create what would later be the even more successful Sweet Spirit. At the same time, Sabrina was performing alongside A Giant Dog, a garage-rock band with Andrew Cashen. Austin took notice of Sabrina’s new pop and soul infused music and was eager to join her on her new journey. It was immediately apparent that it was what they were meant to do, as songwriting came naturally for the two of them. It didn’t take long for this new project to garner a lot of attention. Britt Daniel of the band Spoon took a liking to Sweet Spirit and asked them to perform for the band’s next tour, even collaborating with them on the song “Have Mercy”. Mike McCarthy, who previously produced Spoon’s music, invited Sweet Spirit into the studio and the rest is sort of history.
