Jennie Kim, before performing as the solo act known only as Jennie, got her start in one of k pop’s biggest acts: Blackpink. While the all-girl band has gone on to become iconic, Jennie’s solo career has taken on a life of its own. Jennie attended elementary school in Seoul, South Korea before making her way to New Zealand. It was here where she dreamt of becoming a ballet dancer. Around this time, Jennie discovered k pop through YG Entertainment’s music. As a twist of fate, she would eventually get signed under that same label after auditioning for them, singing “Take a Bow” by Rihanna. Shortly after, she joined Blackpink. Her solo career officially started with her debut single, the aptly named “Solo” which hit the number 2 spot on the Korean charts. The song went on to win Song of the Year during the 2019 Gaon Chart Music Awards and Best Digital Song at the Golden Disc Awards..
