Justin Kauflin is a composer, educator, record producer, and jazz pianist. He was born in Silver Spring, Maryland but made his way to Virginia Beach, Virginia with his family as a child. While there, he learned how to play classical music on the piano and violin. When he was eleven, Justin lost his eyesight after a proliferative exudative retinopathy. He learned how to read Braille but nothing stopped him from pursuing his music. He graduated in the top one percent as Salem High School with an Advanced Academic diploma. Justin was Valedictorian at the Governor’s School for the Arts. He also got a Presidential scholarship for him to go to William Paterson University, where he gained a mentor in legendary jazz musician Clark Terry. He has contributed to many different albums as a leader and as a sideman, starting with an appearance on a Frank Hauch album in 2004 and then another appearance on “Sinnett Hearings” the very next year. Overall, he’s contributed to over 27 albums. As a leader, he performed on “Introducing Justin Kauflin” in 2010.
