Graig Nettles has gone down in history as being one of the top defensive third basemen in MLB history, having also played with the Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves, and Montreal Expos. Also a skilled offensive player, Nettles set an AL record for career home runs by a third baseman. A member of four pennant-winning Yankee teams, Nettle’s most memorable season was in 1977, when he won his first Gold Glove Award and achieved career-highs in home runs with 37 and runs batted with 107, leading the Yankees to two World Series victories. The following season, he won another Gold Glove Award. Throughout his playing career, Nettles was a six-time All-Star and AL Championship Series MVP. Nettles has been inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions and the Breitbard Hall of Fame, recognizing San Diego’s best athletes both on and off the field. Currently, he holds the single-season MLB record for assists by a third baseman, and is tied with Brooks Robinson for second-most all-time. His 412 assists broke the record of 405 held by Harlond Cliff and Robinson. In his first pro year, he achieved 410 assists, breaking Clete Boyer’s franchise record of 396. Nettles and Robinson have four of the six 400-assist seasons by a third baseman in Major League history.

After retiring as a player, Nettles became a manager and player for the St. Lucie Legends of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He also played for the league’s Bradenton Explorers, batting .301 and playing in a total of 62 games; ten for St. Lucie and 52 for Bradenton. Nettles then became the manager for the Bakersfield Blaze of the California League. .
