Keith Sykes once traveled by hitchhiking to the Newport Folk Festival in the summer of 1967 to see Arlo Guthrie play "Alice's Restaurant." He acquired a copy of the album that year's fall, memorized the entire song, and performed it at a Holiday Inn in Charleston, South Carolina. He was immediately engaged for a regular position performing music in the hotel. In the more than 40 years that followed, Keith would become a troubadour and storyteller, as well as a hugely successful songwriter with more than 100 songs recorded by artists as diverse as George Thorogood and Rosanne Cash. It's kind of fitting that such a rambling tale should be at the beginning of his own rambling story. He performed in almost every type of venue imaginable while touring the whole country, had appearances on Saturday Night Live and Austin City Limits, and hosted songwriter evenings on Memphis' renowned Beale Street with many of the genre's most gifted composers. He would tour the nation as a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band and record the album Volcano, whose title track he co-wrote with Jimmy. More than 25 million copies of Keith's song recordings have been sold globally to date.
