Karen was raised singing gospel music in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where she was born and raised (her birthdate was August 14). She initially explored a career in religious music, performing with Soul Unlimited and working with the Harmonettes, a group that would eventually become Direction, to cut her debut album, Stop by Here. After marrying Gary Wolfe, the famous soul-blues singer Denise LaSalle's brother-in-law, Karen made the switch from gospel to blues in 1992. As Denise's backing vocalist, Karen was hired.
Karen secured a recording contract with B&J Records and began recording her debut album, First Time Out, in 2006 after performing for a number of years with Denise. The monster hit single Man Enough, which is now regarded as an anthem for powerful women everywhere, was featured on her third studio album, A Woman Needs a Strong Man, which was released three years later. For her subsequent album, Telling It Like It Is, Karen switched to Coday Records in 2012. No Regrets was released in 2015 by the same label. The first song from Karen's fifth album, That Chick Ain't Me, was then made available in the summer of 2017. She brought in 2018 with the release of You Ain't Woman Enough, her second album.
