Irreversible Entanglements was founded in early 2015 by saxophone Keir Neuringer, poet Camae Ayewa (also known as Moor Mother), and bassist Luke Stewart. They came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event held in response to the NYPD killing of Akai Gurley. The whole quintet's first performance together was recorded for this debut after the ensemble later added trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and percussionist Tcheser Holmes (a duet that also performed at the MAPB event) for a single day of recording at Seizure's Palace in Brooklyn. The instrumentalists explore and extend compositional ideas drawn from their in-depth individual studies of free jazz improvisation in four furious bouts of creative fire music, but Ayewa's searing poetic narrations of Black tragedy, survival, and power decisively set the tone for each piece. The music's undeniable core is its message. The spirit and subject the band channels and explores constitute a return to a fundamental tenet of the sound as it was founded—to be a vehicle for Black liberation—even though free jazz with voice is an uncommon approach in the contemporary landscape of the genre. This is music that acknowledges and resists tradition, speaking to the present while insisting on the future, and is as imaginative and daring as any CD of modern avant-garde jazz, without providing listeners with any abstractions to hide behind.
