In 1964, after enrolling in college courses, Draper joined the U.S. Air Force. While stationed in Alaska, he devised a way to gain access to a local phone switchboard so that his fellow service members could make free calls home. He established WKOS (W-"chaos"), a pirate radio station in the nearby town of Dover-Foxcroft, in 1967 while stationed at Charleston Air Force Station in Maine, but shut it down after WDME, a legally-licensed radio station, objected.
In 1968, Draper left the Air Force as an Airman First Class with distinction. He relocated to Silicon Valley where he briefly worked as an engineering technician for National Semiconductor and at Hugle International on the first cordless phone prototypes. Through 1972, he also participated in part-time classes at De Anza College.
He also adopted the countercultural fashions of the day while working as an engineer and disc jockey for KKUP in Cupertino, California, at this time..
