Watkins put out seven singles, one compilation album, and five studio albums with Nickel Creek. She recorded three solo albums over the course of the band's seven-year hiatus: Sara Watkins, Sun Midnight Sun, and Young in All the Wrong Ways, all on Nonesuch Records. In 2008, Watkins traveled the country as the opening act. She completed brief tours in March and April as Tift Merritt's opening act along the West Coast, along with Robert Earl Keen in September in New England, and a 17-date run with Donavon Frankenreiter in October. She made an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on April 14, 2009, performing alongside her brother Sean Watkins on guitar, Jones on bass, and Questlove of The Roots on drums. She made her stage debut with A Prairie Home Companion on August 28, 2011, at the Minnesota State Fair. She accompanied Jackson Browne on his 2012 winter acoustic tour as the opening act.
Watkins announced on Twitter in September 2011 that she would start working on a second album in the following fall. Sun Midnight Sun, Watkins' second solo album, was released in May 2012 by Nonesuch Records once more. It was created by Blake Mills, a former Simon Dawes guitarist, and includes Fiona Apple and Jackson Browne as special guests.
In 2016 at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, Watkins was named "Instrumentalist of the Year.".
