Mattmac, who was born into the Garden Hill First Nation and grew up in an environment rich in musical influences, discovered early on that singing in his community's gospel choir was a healthy way to deal with his visual impairment and grew up to become a musician. After that, he began producing beats and writing songs, while simultaneously teaching himself how to play the piano and the guitar along the way. He attributes his capabilities to the backing of the Bling and Famous organization, which is a collective of blind music artists based in the United States of America that collaborate and interact with one another through the internet.

Mattmac announced his arrival on the music world for the first time in 2016, when he accepted an invitation from N'we Jinan, a mobile music studio program, to participate in a project that they were working on together. They made a song and video titled "Help You See," which has earned over 250,000 views on both YouTube and Facebook. The motivation for this project came from his own personal story. Because of this, Mattmac is now in collaboration with the internationally renowned musician Nelly Furtado, with whom he shared the stage at Indigenous Day Live and We Day Canada Day in 2017.
