Dr. Pat Steeg serves as the deputy chief of the National Cancer Institute's Center for Cancer Research's Women's Malignancies Branch. She has spent 25 years researching the molecular processes involved in the spread of breast cancer. Nm23, the first metastasis suppressor gene, was found by her. In eleven different model systems, Nm23 has now been shown to suppress metastasis (but not primary tumor formation). A lysophosphatidic acid receptor 1 antagonist was discovered to mimic Nm23 overexpression and to cause metastatic dormancy in triple-negative breast cancer preclinical models in her most recent research. Dr. Steeg has looked into the molecular pathways of breast cancer metastasis to the brain in addition to her studies in metastasis suppressors. She served as the principal investigator (PI) of a Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program Center of Excellence that brought together academics and medical professionals to conduct presurgical clinical trials, pharmacokinetic analysis, gene expression profiling, and preclinical models. A program for young patients with breast cancer metastases has just been started by Dr. Steeg. She received a FLEX grant from the NCI to investigate the metastasis of breast cancer in mouse models, directly contrasting young and old mice to spot patterns and potential causes. She is working with academics at the Walter Reed Military Institute to investigate patterns in the occurrence of breast cancer in young servicewomen.
