For publications such as National Geographic Traveler, The New Yorker, Slate.com, Outside, the New York Times Magazine, The Believer, The Guardian (U.K.), Sports Illustrated, National Public Radio and the Travel Channel, Rolf Potts has written from more than sixty different countries. His travels have taken him to six continents and included sailing a fishing boat 900 miles down the Laotian Mekong, hitchhiking through Eastern Europe, walking through Israel, riding a bicycle through Burma, driving a Land Rover through South America and spending six weeks traveling without any bags or luggage.
Potts' book, The Vagabond's Way: 366 Meditations on Wanderlust, Discovery and the Art of Travel, was released by Ballantine Books. Potts is perhaps most known for advocating the philosophy of autonomous travel. His best-selling first book, Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel (Random House), has seen 35 printings and been translated into many different languages all over the world.
His book Marco Polo Didn't Go There: Stories and Revelations from One Decade as a Postmodern Travel Writer (Travelers' Tales), a collection of literary travel essays, was the first work by an American author to win Italy's Chatwin Prize for travel writing. It also received a Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers.
His podcast, Deviate, has been praised for its unconventional travel discussions by publications like the New York Times and Washington Post.
