Dr. Kristen Carpenter is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, Psychology (joint), and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ohio State University. She also participates actively in the Comprehensive Cancer Center's Cancer Control Program. She also serves as the Wexner Medical Center's Director of Women's Behavioral Health, where women receive cutting-edge treatment for sexual health, substance use disorders, stress, and mood and anxiety disorders with a focus on pregnancy, the postpartum period, gynecologic and breast cancers, menopause, and the menstrual cycle. She completed her clinical psychology internship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, her postdoctoral fellowships in cancer prevention and control at University of California Los Angeles, and her research on the relationship between sexuality and cancer at The Ohio State University before earning her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a focus in Health Psychology in 2006. During various stages of diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship, her study focuses on identifying risk factors for sexual and psychological maladjustment in gynecologic and breast cancer patients. Dr. Carpenter also works on identifying the interpersonal and cognitive mechanisms that control the course of sexual and psychological events. An NCI-funded (R21) randomized clinical study of a psychosexual intervention for female cancer patients, which has recently been modified for breast cancer survivors, is the most recent outcome of this line of research. Dr. Carpenter is a well-liked instructor in health psychology, sexuality, and cancer control.
