Michael E. Kinsley is a political pundit and journalist from the United States. He worked primarily in print media as a writer and editor, but he also gained popularity with television viewers as a co-host on Crossfire. Kinsley was born in Detroit, Michigan. After graduating from Harvard College, he attended the Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. At Harvard, Kinsley held the position of vice president of The Harvard Crimson, the school's daily newspaper. He received a Rhodes Scholarship, attended Magdalen College in Oxford and then went back to Harvard to pursue a law degree.
Kinsley started working for The New Republic when he was a third-year law student. Through classes at The George Washington University Law School's evening program, he was able to complete his Harvard juris doctorate.
As the moderator of William Buckley's Firing Line, Kinsley gained his initial exposure to a large national television audience. He was appointed The New Republic's editor and contributed to its TRB section. That letter established Kinsley's status as a preeminent political writer and was repeated in numerous newspaper op-ed sections, including The Washington Post. The Gerald Loeb Award for Commentary was shared by him.
Additionally, Kinsley worked as the American editor of The Economist (a position he held for a year and a half), editor at Harper's (for a year and a half) and managing editor of Washington Monthly (while still in school).
Kinsley then accepted a position as editorial page editor at the Los Angeles Times. During his tenure, Kinsley attempted to revamp the paper's editorial page and launched an unsuccessful Wikitorial.
He resumed writing a weekly column for The Washington Post and Slate (which he co-founded) and for a brief period, he was The Guardian's American editor. Additionally, he started writing regular columns for Time magazine, although he claimed that the publication had "dumped" him..
