American indie pop duo Cafuné is made up of producer Noah Yoo and singer-songwriter Sedona Schat. After the two met at New York University, it was created in 2014. After their 2021 debut album Running's hit "Tek It" became popular on TikTok in 2022, they were quickly signed to Elektra Records the same year. Having grown up playing the violin and later the guitar in high school bands, Noah Yoo was reared in Fairfax, Virginia. He and Sedona Schat met at the Clive Davis Institute at New York University, when they both started their studies in 2012, and they became friends through their shared love of Two Door Cinema Club. Yoo contributed to one of Schat's songs during their sophomore year, and the following year, when Yoo briefly lived with Schat, they both began working on Cafuné as a side project. Yoo was a Pitchfork employee as well. In 2014, Cafuné released their first single, "Letting Go." Love Songs for Other People, their debut EP, was made available in 2015. The couple wrote and produced Running, their debut album, at their residences over a number of years. It was recorded during the pandemic in 2020 and published on July 20, 2021, by their own label, Aurelians Club. It contained the singles "High," "Want Me Out," and "Tek It," the last of which became popular on TikTok in the early years of 2022 as a result of its inclusion in anime edits and other TikTok trends, leading Elektra Records to sign the group in June of that year.
