CUBENSIS, a band that performs the music of the Grateful Dead, was formed in 1987 by a group of musicians who were Deadheads in response to the band's extremely infrequent trips to Southern California. Guitarist Craig Marshall put together a band to meet the demand, and they began playing at local bars and backyard events under the name "Sugar Cubensis." However, people kept confusing them with Bjork's band the Sugar Cubes, so they eventually changed their name. In the interest of simplicity, the name was shortened to "Cubensis." The music of The Dead was used as the framework for this group's own improvisational explorations, and word quickly spread about them. Even in this day and age, it would be impossible to refer to CUBENSIS as a "Dead Cover Band" without also noting that they receive their inspiration from the same sources as the Masters themselves..
