After launching the project in the middle of the decade, she published her debut record, Monsters, in 2018 and continued to experiment with her fusion of tortured musical styles with Songs for My Funeral in 2021. Born and bred in Los Angeles, Flores took up the stage name DeathbyRomy when he was 15 years old. She was bullied and struggled with despair, and she soon left high school to pursue a career in music. Her experiences over the following several years as she learned how to combat negativity served as the inspiration for her debut album. Early music from 2016 included "Blood" and "Wonder Boy" (with Violet Kennedy). Before releasing her debut album, Monsters, in September 2018, she shared a dozen or so extra tracks, including collaborations with Los Angeles hip-hop artists Glitter Princess and LePlay. Yung Bans, Lil B, and Cuban Doll made appearances. She released several new songs in 2019—including "Dangerous," which features Blackbear—as well as the EP Love U - to Death, which featured the memorable and often played song "Problems." The following year, pop-friendly rapper 24kGoldn gave "Problems" a remix, and DeathbyRomy consistently released new songs throughout the year, including "Beautiful Mayhem" and "Fiending for a Lover." She also had a sinister take on the Weather Girls' "It's Raining Men," which was featured on the soundtrack for the movie Promising Young Woman.
