Together with Buck, Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies, McCaughey started the band as a side project.
The Posies and McCaughey's The Young Fresh Fellows had both recorded at Conrad Uno's Egg Studios and issued albums on Uno's PopLlama Records label, establishing significant personal and business connections for the four performers. The Young Fresh Fellows and The Posies were regulars at the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle, which Buck Dorgan's wife, Stephanie Dorgan, owned and operated. The Young Fresh Fellows opened for Kevn Kinney at the Croc and Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry of R.E.M. backed Kinney.
They recorded a cover of the popular song "Arms of Mary" by the Quiver and Sutherland Brothers for the radio station WFMU's fundraising CD, "Super Hits of the Seventies." The group performed at SXSW as well.
Alejandro Escovedo was accompanied on a brief tour by The Minus 5. Scott McCaughey, Kurt Bloch, Peter Buck and John Moen performed as the Minus Five for the first set of each concert and then backed up Escovedo for the second set, occasionally with Kelly Hogan as well.
