Wilson was born in Seattle to a Japanese mother and an African-American father. She learned to read, write and speak Japanese from her mother. Wilson's father plays the drums, while her mother plays the piano. UMI started keeping a songwriting diary when she was 4 or 5 years old. She participated in the Tahoma High School track team and DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) throughout her time in high school. She started writing to songs after discovering YouTube beats in high school. Using a USB microphone, she would record the tunes and post them to SoundCloud and YouTube. By releasing covers of other songs, she soon began to face copyright issues on SoundCloud. She began penning and sharing her own original content as a result.
According to UMI, Frank Ocean, D'Angelo, Jhené Aiko, Erykah Badu and SZA are her main musical influences. She was exposed to R&B, soul, gospel and Japanese pop/rock as children. According to Vogue, UMI has a "lo-fi, alternative, laid-back, R&B aesthetic.".

There is low probability to book UMI for a party with anything substantially less than the published booking cost price range.
