Like many great bands, Sleater-Kinney lived in the moment so completely that it took them a while to understand how much of an impact they had. They were the group who gathered all the turmoil of the alt-rock explosion of the first half of the decade and channeled it into a ferocious mission statement, making them the defining American indie rock band of the second half of the '90s. Sleater-Kinney's all female lineup was not a coincidence; before forming S-K, co-leaders Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein both began playing in Northern Pacific riot grrrl bands and their rock & roll had strong roots in feminism. However, calling them the best female rock band of their generation is too narrow.
Sleater-Kinney was one of the best bands of their time by many accounts, encapsulating the spirit of the time and quickly growing while releasing album after album that reinvented their music without straying from their punk rock (or political) beliefs. After adding drummer Janet Weiss for Dig Me Out, they went on a hot streak that lasted until The Woods. Thereafter, they went on a "indefinite break" that lasted for almost ten years.
"Hurry on Home," the lead song from Sleater-Kinney's ninth album, The Center Won't Hold, marked the band's comeback. St. Vincent produced The Center Won't Hold, which debuted on Mom + Pop, but Janet Weiss departed the band a month before it was made available. Brownstein and Tucker carried on with the album's release and tour. With the release of Dig Me In: A Dig Me Out Covers Album in October, Sleater-Kinney commemorated the 25th anniversary of the seminal album by performing every song from it.
