The original line-up included singer/guitarist Rai Thistlethwayte, lead guitarist Matt Baker, bassist Phil Stack and drummer Karl Robertson. The band released its debut EP, First Work and scored hits with the songs "Wasting Time" and "Emancipate Myself." The band's subsequent self-titled full-length, which featured the songs "My Completeness" and "Someday, Someway," made it into the Top 20 of the Australian LP charts. Despite the album's success, Baker left the band soon after it was released and the remaining trio hired Sean Carey, the former guitarist for Midnight Swim, to take his place. When Thirsty Merc released an enhanced version of the album, the extra track "When the Weather Is Fine" became a modest hit.
Following Carey's departure, Matt Smith of the afrobeat and reggae group The Strides took over on the guitar for Thirsty Merc. Carey desired a career as a music producer. While the album's lead single, had debuted in May and peaked in the Top 30 on the ARIA Singles Chart, the band undertook a national tour in support of it. Tommy and Krista, the second single, was released in September and reached its high at position 10 in New Zealand. The video trailers for the AFL grand final incorporated another song, "All My Life," in them.
