Curse Your Branches and Strange Negotiations, David Bazan's first two solo albums, were deeply rooted in queries. Questions about religion, relationships, politics and addiction. Bazan is not the place to go if you're searching for art to dispel your doubt. His songs are the tiniest speck of light, the first breath coming up for air and the rest stop on a journey with no end in sight, with a repertoire that orbits the deepest recesses of the human experience.
Bazan released a string of songs under the pseudonym Pedro the Lion. These tracks were widely lauded and candidly depicted Bazan's journey from struggling believer to dissatisfied unbeliever.
In order to achieve some sort of sustainability, Bazan gave up the band name and started out on his own. There is no quick fix or magic formula—only years of trial and error and the persistence to see things through.
Bazan furthered his efforts to organize his life on the road as Curse Your Branches was being prepared for publication by developing a new touring strategy: living room shows. He went on tour after tour in the US and abroad, switching between small solo house concerts for a handful of dozen people and rock venues with a 300-500 capacity for his band. The home show model was a quiet success, despite the fact that many people thought it was a risky bet.
Bazan's most recent music captures the nomadic lifestyle of a traveling troubadour. Bazan started the project to see what kind of songs would emerge if he sat down in a small bedroom in his basement, propelled by a deadline, kids sleeping upstairs and wrote from the duality that had previously prevented him from writing — what it means to have a home, but have to constantly leave it to make ends meet. The album is made up of tracks that were previously available in a very limited edition 7" vinyl series called Bazan Monthly, Volume 1 and Volume 2..
