Baek Hwong, a singer-songwriter and guitarist based in Los Angeles, is the creative force behind the project known as NoSo. Baek received his degree in music from the University of Southern California (the same institution as King Princess and MUNA), and he cites as reference sources artists such as Blood Orange, Ben Howard, "Born in the USA," and k-pop from the 1990s. Additionally, in 2019, they competed and placed as finalists in the Tiny Desk Contest. The struggle to find one's own identity, fighting the feeling that one is a fraud, and burying painful memories all find expression in their music. A reference to their Korean ancestry, "NoSo" is an abbreviation for the phrase "North/South." Hwong's writing frequently and obliquely grapples with the uncertainties and frustrations that can come as a result of having an Asian American background. Their lyrics, such as this one from the song "I Feel You," have the effect of a soothing salve for those who feel isolated. Hwong spent the most of their time in isolation during their quarantine in their bedroom, where they also created and recorded a good portion of their debut album, "Stay Proud of Me."
