On their debut, No Regerts, Chastity Belt balanced intelligent, edgy music against lyrics that were frequently filled with goofball wit and feminist satire, drawing inspiration from both the politics of the riot grrrl scene and the intricate, moody guitar-based sound of early '90s Pacific Northwestern indie bands like Sleater-Kinney and Autoclave. On their third album, I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone, their music got more subtle and sophisticated and their lead singer Julia Shapiro went into deeper and more personal subjects.
In Walla Walla, Chastity Belt was founded. Guitarist Lydia Lund, bassist Annie Truscott, drummer Gretchen Grimm and lead vocalist/guitarist Julia Shapiro made up the group. The band made a swift transition from their initially solemn musical presence to irreverent humor. In addition to having clever and biting lyrics, the band gave their first locally heard demo recordings the moniker Fuck Chastity Belt and afterwards took press images showing Shapiro wearing a chastity belt made of raw meat. When they released their official debut, No Regerts, they carried on this pattern by softly but purposefully mispelling "No Regrets" as one might on a hideously, comically failed tattoo.
After spending a lot of time on the road in promotion of No Regrets, the band released Time to Go Home on their new label, Hardly Art Records. In the summer, Chastity Belt headed to Portland to record new music with producer Matthew Simms. I Used to Spend So Much Time Alone, a third album by Hardly Art that was more somber and intimate as a result, was the end product. Following the album's release, Shapiro's health prompted her to stop traveling, so the band took a brief vacation while she recorded Perfect Version, a solo album that Hardly Art released..
