Jordan Mackampa's music, like those of the soul legends he grew up listening to and the grime artists he cherishes, is intended to inform as much as amuse. His raw songs, which are reflections of his existence as an outsider, span from his birthplace in the Republic of Congo to his hip hop-obsessed upbringing in north London to his formative years indie-rocking in Coventry.
Jordan's powerful message music has expanded quickly in scope and scale, absorbing new influences and becoming more complex. From his breakthrough with the protest song "Battlecry" to acclaimed "What Am I," hailed as a modern take on Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," Jordan's music has a strong message.
Jordan excelled in music and the performing arts and moved to Coventry for high school when his mother obtained a new job. He joined a youth group and quickly established himself as the area DJs and rappers' go-to vocalist, earning a scholarship at Northampton University to study popular music.
He founded and led his first band after discovering his love for indie rock there. He briefly believed that rock might be his career, but in his last year of college, James Vincent McMorrow, Ben Howard and Nick Mulvey introduced him to folk music. He then started making frequent journeys to London to sing at open-mic evenings. By combining his folky soul with the funky rhythms of his Congolese heritage and inspirations from both indie and grime, Jordan had advanced beyond his days as an acoustic singer/songwriter. With the magnificent Cam Blackwood (George Ezra, London Grammar) produced single "One In The Same," which put a plea for human engagement in tech-obsessed times to his sunniest song to date, Jordan saw yet another leap forward.
