Peter Kember had a new opportunity to go it alone when Sonic Boom made its debut with Spectrum. Kember left the iconic English psych soul band Spacemen 3, which he co-founded with Jason Pierce and replaced it with poppy psychedelia with lo-fi edges, gridless guitars and Velvets-obligated scowls. The self-taught experimentation, circuit bending and interest in modular synthesis that would characterize Kember's career as a producer and performer were alluding to in his new solo work.
But Kember, who was naturally a conspirator, began to feel lonely. Spectrum eventually gave birth to a group of the same name, who went on to tour extensively and release several songs, including one in collaboration with Silver Apples.
The name Sonic Boom continued to be used for split releases, production work for artists like MGMT, Beach House and Panda Bear, as well as solo performances (during which Kember controls a tabletop of keyboards, noisemakers and modules by himself).
Finally, All Things Being Equal adds a second notch and a first for Carpark Records, which is home to several artists Kember has produced, to the Sonic Boom discography. The songs started out as instrumental studio sketches in Rugby, UK, and were recorded and mixed over the course of a half-decade. Kember says of his move to a national park in Sintra, Portugal, "but I wanted to get out of the metropolitan commercialized environment," calling it "an enchanting area noted for being inspiring.".
