Demi Demitro, a guitarist who grew up in Boulder, channeled her rebelliousness through her instrument, spending up to nine hours a day honing her craft while neglecting her studies. The result is a playing style that is both heavy and agile, theatrical and nuanced, grounded in rock history but completely unique. The band gained a reputation for their wild performances with Baby Pottersmith and Jonny Fig playing on a joint set. Dan Auerbach received clips of the band's live performances and homemade movies and offered them to work on Nightmare Daydream in his Nashville studio.
Demitro met Baby Pottersmith, a multi-instrumentalist who could play the drums, guitar, bass and keyboards, while attending a local reggae performance. The two decided to start a band, with Demitro playing guitar and singing at first and Pottersmith playing drums, but they periodically added a second guitar or keys. John Demitro, Demi's brother, joined them as a third member on drums and they recorded "Death Hex". They immediately transitioned from performing indie clubs in their homeland to sold-out theaters on another continent when the band Deap Vally requested them to join them as their opening act on a tour of the United Kingdom that same year. The group lucked into one of the biggest gigs of their careers during the gap between finishing the album and its release when they were chosen to open a Guns 'n Roses stadium event in Denver, Colorado when the original opening act had to withdraw due to illness..
