Jakob Armstrong, the youngest child of Green Day singer Billie Joe, started playing the guitar at age seven. He practiced alone and then joined bands in and around Oakland after making friends who shared his musical preferences. With the images of Ultraman action figures fighting in his head, he eventually created Ultra Q with a group of pals he made while hanging out and listening to music during those years.
Ultra Q's evolution since their EP We're Starting to Get Along has been exponential, fusing together the lofty lift of Interpol, the brilliant guitar interplay of the Strokes, the maudlin romanticism of the Cure and the frequently impressionistic narrative talents of Arctic Monkeys. From Berkeley to Rodeo Drive, fragments of broken glass shone in the sunlight as a typical alternative rock sound was baked by the Californian heat. Armstrong's voice is carried by a highly recognizable lilt over blasting guitars and booming drumming. Armstrong self-recorded In a Cave in a Video Game on a whim while confined and it would be easy to place it between the blown-out, lo-fi tones of early Wavves and the works of the deliberately harsh-sounding Columbus band Psychedelic Horseshit.
