In the service of good vibes, spiritual uplift and "don't worry, be happy" fun, cool jazzy tones are peppered with pop, hip-hop, reggae, soul, calypso and even some street-corner swing. But once you go past those attractive, beguiling Surfaces, that's when Colin Padalecki and Forrest Frank, the band's two main musicians, genuinely reveal their three-dimensional musical richness. Forrest handles the vocals and production while Colin handles the composition and orchestration. Together, the two have gradually combined their unique strengths to create an outstanding total. The pair recently finished their first national club gigs, a sold-out "Endless Summer" tour that included performances in New York and Los Angeles at the renowned Roxy after releasing two self-produced albums.
While Houston-born Forrest was 90 miles away at Baylor in Waco and San Antonio-native Colin was attending Texas A&M, the two started their collaborative creative process by exchanging iPhone voice recordings. Frank was familiar with a number of Padalecki's SoundCloud songs that included vocals from his first cousin Alexa, who continues to sing for the band. When Forrest relocated to Seattle after both of them received their degrees and they started working together, they started recording on his houseboat on Lake Union near Gas Works Park. The two were unprepared by the overwhelming response from listeners when they posted the collection on TuneCore, but they quickly left for a lakefront log cabin outside of Austin to begin writing the songs for Where the Light Is, which was released earlier this year.
