American Siren, while not entirely autobiographical, skillfully combines memorable characters from fiction with real people she met while traveling. In "If Trouble Comes a Lookin'," the author shows off her storytelling skills by creating a setting where a sensitive priest and an unhappy wife meet in a hotel bar in Arkansas. Her cousin, a soldier who committed suicide, is honored in "Hometown Hero" with a moving homage. She initially created "Old Gods" for a stage performance of Macbeth, and it serves as the album's main track. It brings the siren theme to its maximum potential with lovely three-part female harmonies.
