James Connolly has had a fifteen-year career and has not only survived the unpredictable world of electronic music, but also actively contributed to its development. Connolly has made an enduring impact on club culture that spans the globe through his releases as both L-Vis 1990 and Dance System as well as his work as the co-founder of the hugely influential label Night Slugs and now System Records. He has also influenced a whole new generation of producers and DJs.
Connolly, a Brighton native, started DJing before he was old enough to enter a club. Connolly would play garage, breaks and DnB music once he was allowed into the club. When the lights came up, he would leave Brighton in search of free parties on the Sussex Downs.
As Dance System, Connolly began to completely re-engage with club culture. Danny Howard named him one of his Artists to Watch and Connolly released his Relentless EP on Chiwax, which he launched live on BBC Radio 1. Calvin Harris announced Dance System (together with Special Request) as a big influence for his Love Regenerator project, perhaps solidifying his status as a widely hailed breakout star.
Because of how drastically the context and environments in which we are listening have changed, this is a foreign and out of place time for dance music.
