Boslen is a pioneer from birth. The people of Vancouver have become essential to how the hip-hop experimenter views himself and his art. A place of contrasts with snowy peaks and warm waters, lush landscapes and crowded cities, it's the ideal place for an artist to reconcile conflicting impulses by fusing various genres and sounds that don't naturally go together. His Capitol Records debut, DUSK to DAWN, continues this daring approach by hypnotically fusing trap, pop, punk and rock tunes. Hip-hop wasn't a huge part of Boslen's upbringing growing up in Chilliwack, British Columbia, amidst farmland, at least not until his mom and stepdad temporarily split and Kid Cudi offered a support system. After arriving at the University of Victoria and having his rugby scholarship and ambitions for a career in sports derailed by back-to-back ACL tears, he eventually began producing his own music during a difficult period.
As a result, each of the album's singles highlights a distinctive aspect of his music. "DENY," a punk-influenced song, combines painful memories and hard-won optimism. Featuring Toronto rapper Charmaine, the boastful "QUARTZ" is exhilaratingly rude. There are also lighter tracks on the album called "dusk" where Boslen reflects on his surroundings.
