Alfa Mist first taught himself how to make beats as a young student in East Ham, London and then discovered jazz through the hip-hop sampling of artists like Hi-tek, Madlib and J Dilla. In order to analyze the intricate harmonic arrangements on these foundational songs, he taught himself to play the piano by ear. Over time, he developed his own production approach, which combines head-nodding rhythms with the spontaneity of jazz improvisation and a pervading sense of melody.
