Molly Lewis' compositions are hypnotic and otherworldly, romantic and starry and they seem to drift into our ears from faraway beaches.  Lewis's music has an ethereal quality and is more inspired by imaginal seascapes than by any known port. Lewis is unlike anybody else in modern music and it isn't only because she uses a wind instrument that few others do: her lips.
Also, compared to many of her contemporaries, her work draws from a wider range of traditions. She has recorded a variety of music, from Brazilian jazz to piano-accompanied Schumann lieder, from noir-influenced lounge to spaghetti western ballads fit for any Sergio Leone movie. Even a cursory look at Lewis's work reveals that she has been hard at work creating her own tradition by fusing unexpected bits of musical history with her own concepts of what music can accomplish and be. The result is her distinctive, cinematic sound. Lewis has spent the last ten years making whistling a viable, if not essential, component of modern songwriting.
Lewis was born in Australia, raised in Los Angeles, went back to Australia when she was twelve and then eventually settled back in L.A.
