Jake Luppen's solo debut as Lupin is all sharp edges, a shattered self-portrait stitched together through left-of-center, funk-leaning maximalism, spread throughout eight songs of twisted, expansive pop. Luppen learned who he could be and was always going to be as an artist and simply as a person during the record-making process, which served as a vehicle for his self-discovery and journey toward self-assurance.
The songs on Lupin make you feel as though you're meeting Luppen for the first time, despite the fact that he originally gained notoriety as the vocalist and guitarist for St. Paul's renowned indie band Hippo Campus. He has always avoided the personal in favor of the more general, bandmate-shared experiences while creating songs in the past. He was able to accomplish the reverse thanks to his solo career. Luppen gets the courage to write about his life in this piece rather than hiding behind grander words or looser concepts.
