Hugo Stanley on drums, Gerasimos Livitsanos on bass, Eve Alpert on guitar and vocals and Kasra Kurt on guitar and vocals make up the Philadelphia-based band Palm. They recently released their new album, Nicks and Grazes, on Saddle Creek. With Nicks and Grazes, Palm embraces dissonance to stunning effect by using components from the conventionally gridded electronic music palette while capturing the spontaneous, uninhibited spirit of their distinctive live performances. The band also discovered themselves revisiting the musicians that inspired them to form the group over ten years ago, such as Glenn Branca, Captain Beefheart and Sonic Youth. They cite Japanese pop music, dub and footwork as inspirations on the album's sonic environment. Palm produced their most ambitious and revelatory record as a result of going back to the fundamentals, which provided them with a solid base upon which they could explore freely.
The use of samples helps bring the members' individual and collective experiences into foreground, even if a consistent narrative is elusive throughout the whole album. Snippets of dialogue from the band's Spanish tour and the early-morning marching band rehearsal of a high school in Philadelphia are just two instances of the daily audio debris that the band combined with instrumentation to forge a novel social experience..
