The last time New Madrid released an album, they were a single household in Athens, Georgia. In preparation for a release, Phil McGill relocated to New York and established his own Kentucky Bend. It's unintentionally developed into a phase similar of how the band began, writing with Phil in Georgia and Ben Hackett, Alex Woolley and Graham Powers in Tennessee. 
After magnetkingmagnetqueen, writing for the album's title, New Madrid, began and lasted for over two years. Recording started but wasn't finished for years because the band members wanted to develop as musicians and find fresh sources of inspiration for the new tunes.
The band had been releasing an LP every two years before this protracted process, but the extra time paid off with a compilation that has "all the elements we liked about our prior albums with new material placed on top of it," according to Hackett.
Early demo sessions were fueled by Hackett's developing studio prowess at famed Chase Park Transduction in Georgia as well as the band members' blossoming songwriting careers. Recruiting Drew Vandenberg to create and engineer the project was the final piece of the jigsaw. The resultant 10-song album, self-titled to signify a newfound emphasis, sees New Madrid revisiting the southern indie rock tones of their Yardboat debut while experimenting with new aspects of dreamy psychedelia, jangly pop, and energizing punk rock..
