A narrative of time concordance, a matter of energy, the essence to which they each provided fuel in their own particular way, the unique sort, couldn't have worked better between the two. Nicolas Dacunha, a product of the Paris suburbs, and Faty Sy Savanet, a Kinshasa native, both spent their formative years in Lemba, the hipster neighborhood of the Congolese capital. After spending nine years in the Paris outskirts, they emerged on stage as "Tshegue," a group playing tribal garage rock.
The planets lined up such that between these two electrons and a bunch of hooked atoms, this complementary pair would advance rapidly. That is what strikes hollow when learning about their EP, Survivor.
The name of the ensemble, Tshegue, has two meanings: it is both the singer's nickname and the term given to young boys in Kinshasa's streets. His loud and deep voice immediately lends the pitch a gritty atmosphere, which is accentuated by spastic rhythms, aggressive phrasing and a tribal propensity.
Faty Sy Savanet unquestionably delivers punchlines that whack and knock the head. The second track is straight, foot-to-the-floor, with congolese guitars in frenzied loops, rumbling bass, jerky percussion and jumps of an oblique house. The narrative of "Survivor" is told by an uprooted road with two feet stuck in jungle asphalt and its head pointing toward its native soil..
