Ludwig Wicki, a native of Lucerne, Switzerland, grew up in a musical setting that was affected by both church and folk music. He played trombone as a youngster and joined the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and later, he broadened his studies to include orchestral and choral conducting. After spending some time at the Bern Music School, Maestro completed his studies with Cantor Martin Flämig in Dresden and Professor Donato Renzetti in Pescara. He established the Lucerne Philharmonic Brass Quintet and spent a lot of effort on chamber music during this time. Ludwig Wicki was invited to perform with the Empire Brass Quintet at the Tanglewood Academy after the group's recordings became successful and were played on radio, TV and issued on CD.
Maestro regularly performed with other period instrument orchestras and ensembles while playing baroque trombone, which further influenced the way he conducted. The opportunity to work with notable figures like Andrew Parrott, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Jeremy West and Simon Standage was fortunate for Mr. Wicki.
The 21st Century Orchestra Lucerne satisfies Maestro's lifelong enthusiasm for movie music. With Maestro Wicki serving as its only Artistic Director, this professional ensemble currently presents a season-long series of more than ten projects in addition to guest appearances in London, Paris or New York. With well-known film composers including Howard Shore, Michael Giacchino, James Horner, Danny Elfman, Patrick Doyle, Randy Newman, Martin Böttcher and George Fenton, it has formed partnerships. Classic silent films are also accompanied by the 21st Century Orchestra such as Nosferatu, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin classics..
