In hardcore, the pit can be showy, with applause being replaced by stage dives, cheers by back-kicks or pitting in a circle. Yet when viewing a band with the background of Jesus Piece, you can always discern the difference between acting moved and having genuine physical passion. A traditionally indie live space was transformed by the quintet into a battlefield complete with people serving as step stools, railings and wall-mounted tables serving as diving boards and missiles made out of anything that wasn't fastened down, including the disco ball.
The band's leader Aaron Heard orchestrates the crowd's kinetic energy by using a frantic, livewire vocal sequence a la Busta Rhymes, which pushes the crowd closer to utter mayhem and results in a performance that sticks out among others.
Aaron Heard on vocals, David Updike and John Distefano on guitars, Anthony Marinaro on bass and Luis Aponte on drums make up Jesus Piece. The band, which was founded in Philadelphia, put out three EPs before releasing Only Self, their enormous debut LP for Southern Lord Records. The release stood head and shoulders over many of the hardcore and metal crowd, with a diversity that can be traced to the distinct approach and connection amongst the members. Hell, even their name defies standard hardcore naming norms and is derived from a hip hop audience favorite item of jewelry.
