German-Spanish-American singer-songwriter Victoria Canal Tinius, better known by her stage as Victoria Canal, was born on August 11, 1998. Being a third-culture kid who lived in numerous cities, including Shanghai, Tokyo, Barcelona, Madrid, Dubai, and Amsterdam, was a defining aspect of Canal's unusual upbringing. Despite being of American and Cuban ancestry and having lived in Spain for the majority of her life, she describes herself as Spanish-American.

Canal's grandmother, a piano teacher, introduced her to music when she was a little child, sparking a lifelong passion of music in her. She began classical voice and piano studies when she was six years old. After listening to writers like John Mayer and Gavin DeGraw at age 11, she became interested in songwriting and wanted to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter. Wherever she could, Canal entered contests at her local community and educational institutions and started getting employment.

Canal pursued music even though she was born without a right forearm owing to amniotic band syndrome. She made her first original demo CD at JR Studios in Dubai when she was 13 years old, and it was featured on MBC, Dubai One, and other channels. At age 13, she received a full scholarship to the summer performance program at Berklee College of Music. A year later, at age 14, she received a second full scholarship.

Following her graduation from Barcelona's Jazz Conservatory en el Aula del Conservatori and receipt of her diploma, Canal started making frequent trips from Madrid to Atlanta in the fall of 2014 to train with legendary vocalist "Mama Jan" Smith. In order to embark on her first tour and record her debut EP, Into the Pull, which was independently released on January 29, 2016, Canal and her mother Gwen moved to Atlanta in April 2015.
